While the Working Tables and the Stewardship Group are usually on hiatus for July and August, some members of the School Food Working Table were hard at work over the summer, creating an online webinar event scheduled for Oct. 29th from 10:00 am to 12 noon. The event will showcase local and national experts on school food issues and will offer breakout rooms to discuss challenges and opportunities for creating lasting change. Stay tuned for more details and save the date.
The Food Skills Education Working Table is pleased to share a new webpage hosted on the SCFC’s website, created to support people offering food skills and food literacy programming. The new webpage features tools, resources and links to local information about food skills and food literacy. You can find program planning guides, “how-to” videos, recipe ideas and more!
The work on this webpage was planned based on the results of the Working Table’s 2024 community survey, which found that our community would like more support with food literacy!
The Food Skills Education Working Table met on Sept 17th, welcoming two new members, and connecting about our recent experiences touring Operation Grow, the Collingwood Heritage Garden and Karma Project… and thinking about where they would like to meet up next.
The Food Access Table met on September 19th, and discussed challenges and small wins. Bradford Food Bank was given a large cheque to purchase a refrigerated truck and will now be able to make Costco pickups, as that is a required piece of equipment for Costco pick-ups. The general consensus was that donations were down and clients were generally up, in some cases as high as 30%. The Working Table members were given an opportunity to get involved in an exciting potential new food hub for Simcoe Muskoka. The Fundraising & Communications Table lost its Table Lead over the summer, but we were fortunate enough to have Deborah Neary from the United Way Simcoe volunteer to take over the reins.
